The Project:
This was a three year project, commencing in 2008, with the aim of redeveloping a typical 1930s semi-detached house to comply with the zero carbon targets proposed for all new houses built from 2016 onwards.
A typical semi-detached house of the period was constructed to the standards of the time but incorporating a large number of sensors to monitor all aspects of energy usage and consequent CO2 gains.
After a period of monitoring to obtain a baseline various energy saving features, such as double glazing, high efficiency gas boilers, etc. were introduced. Once these had been assessed the house underwent a series of changes to assess the efficacy of various innovative solutions.
Gaskell was appointed to organise the initial construction including the monitoring system, incorporate the desired modifications, as and when required and keep track of building costs over the period of the experiment.
