The Project:
Nottingham H.O.U.S.E is designed as an affordable family house for the mass market and has been designed to meet Passivhaus standards. H.O.U.S.E stands for Home Optimising the Use of Solar Energy and; it adopts a cradle-to-cradle approach to ‘use, reuse and recycle’.
The footprint includes a private courtyard which provides the family with a shaded space for summer, as well as giving them a green space in which to develop a food producing garden. A comfortable interior is provided by the design throughout the different seasons of the year.
Following its successful exhibition at Ecobuild 2010 and the Solar Decathalon Europe in Madrid, where it won second prize for Sustainability, Gaskell were commissioned to arrange its final relocation to a site on the University campus adjoining other energy efficient experimental homes.
Works included the construction of foundations, permanent drainage and mains service connections followed by the moving from storage, craning into position and weather finishing of the H.O.U.S.E. itself.
