The Project:

The Lakeside building on University Park, Nottingham houses the Djanogly Art Gallery & Museum of Archaeology and in the spring of 2012 negotiations were finalised for the art gallery to host the first ever exhibition, in the East Midlands, of Lowry paintings in the  November of that year.

Whilst the gallery had been there for some years this would be the first exhibition of this scale and needed to fully comply with Museum and Library Association (M.L.A.) standards. The decision was also made to rationalise the gallery and museum areas at the same time.

A scheme was drawn up by Marsh Grochowski Architects and tendered to Contractors by Gaskell. Mansell Construction undertook the scheme with Gaskell as Contract Administrator and Quantity Surveyor.

A variety of problems were encountered, generally relating to the existing structure but these were successfully overcome by the Contractor and Design Team.

Following handover the gallery took delivery of the Lowry masterpieces and the exhibition opened on time.

The exhibition was extremely successful and is still the most visited temporary exhibition in the East Midlands.
